Members have been diving into the 2040 Comp Plan and engaging in conversations to understand what the Plan includes and how it will impact the commercial real estate industry. Last month, Larry Shaheen (The McIntosh Law Group) provided members with an overview of the Plan as well as the areas of concern for our industry. Then, members met face-to-face (virtually) with Council Member Ed Driggs to have a discussion about what is happening at City Council as well as speak about the Comp Plan’s impacts on commercial development, our community, and our members. We encourage members to take a look at the many resources available and get involved to be a voice for CRE as these policies unfold.
In addition to the Mentorship Program, where DLs have the opportunity to meet one-one-one with CRE industry leaders, NAIOP Charlotte if offering a new program exclusively for Developing Leaders to meet other DLs and grow their professional network in Charlotte’s commercial real estate community. Registration for the program opens this week! Click here for more information.
NAIOP Charlotte elected the 2021 Board of Directors during the 2020 Annual Meeting last December. The Annual Meeting also featured a panel of industry leaders including Nate Doolittle from LandDesign, Phil Kuttner from LITTLE, Brendan Pierce from Crescent Communities, and Scott Wilson from Childress Klein Properties.
Join us in welcoming the newest members of NAIOP Charlotte!

Last night the “Plan Policy” section of the 2040 Comprehensive Plan passed the Charlotte City Council by a 6-5 vote. This outcome had been widely expected for several weeks.
Last week President Joe Biden announced agreement with a bipartisan group of senators on a bipartisan infrastructure plan that would total $1.2 trillion over eight years. However, the deal almost unraveled when Biden promised not to sign the legislation unless it was accompanied by a reconciliation bill incorporating elements of his other domestic spending priorities.
The Budget Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives was scheduled to begin work this week on assembling the $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package following the submissions from nine House committees.

COVID-19 delivered a gut punch like no other to the commercial real estate industry last year, with transactions in the second quarter of 2020 plummeting approximately 40% over the same period in 2019. Development magazine explains how industry innovation and experimentation are expected post-pandemic.
The U.S. economy is experiencing a strong rebound from the COVID-19-induced recession, resulting in job growth in office-using sectors. However, tenant-safety concerns remain a drag on office leasing.
During the worst of the pandemic, many landlords offered deals where ailing retailers paid a percentage of their monthly sales in rent—rather than a fixed amount—to help them survive. Now, this once temporary way of charging tenants looks poised to outlast Covid-19.
