As REBIC previously reported, the City of Kannapolis is rewriting its UDO.  In November 2018, City Staff along with the consultant team, Clarion, began that process.

Clarion has prepared a UDO Assessment Report for public review.  The report is diagnostic in nature, and serves as an outline of recommended changes that should be considered as the text of the UDO is drafted.

NAIOP North Carolina, comprised of NAIOP Charlotte, NAIOP Piedmont Triad, and NAIOP Raleigh Durham, held its annual statewide conference March 21-22, 2019 at the Pinehurst Resort, where over 240 real estate professionals were in attendance. At the conference, NAIOP NC announced the 2019 Award Winners, recognizing projects that positively influence our community and industry.

New Development Project of the Year – BB&T Leadership Institute submitted by CJMW Architecture

In June 2018, CJMW Architecture broke ground on the BB&T Leadership Institute in Greensboro, NC. A study of the terrain and natural features helped integrate the building into the site with a soft footprint. The full program was broken into smaller building elements that are linked together to create a sort of “village,” lending to the nickname “a village in the woods.” Each element has views of the lake and woods and glass walls that bring the outside in, allowing guests and staff to connect with nature, eliminating the distractions of the outside world while promoting a more inward focus. As an executive leadership program, the Leadership Institute helps grow managers into current and future leaders. Leaders from numerous local and regional companies have attended the Leadership Institute’s programs – gaining insight and training that then help them grow their own companies.

NAIOP Charlotte hosted its third annual Battle of the Bands on Thursday, November 1st and it was a hit! This commercial real estate fundraising event benefitted The Harvest Center. Three bands battled it out for the title of Best Band at the year’s premier networking event. Great food, drinks and music. 

Many thanks to Grievous Angels, Shelley Ruffin and Soul Revival, and Southside Watt for their outstanding performances! Congratulations to Southside Watt who took home the trophy this year!

We are appreciative of all of our partners in success – planning committee volunteers, sponsors, emcee, jury members and attendees – with your support, NAIOP Charlotte was able to donate $7,500 to The Harvest Center plus an additional $1,000 from raffles. We couldn’t have done it without all of your help.

On Wednesday, May 9, 2018, NAIOP Charlotte hosted a form for more than 90 people on the upcoming Mecklenburg Tax Revaluation and the impacts of Federal Tax Reform on Commercial Real Estate.  A special thanks to our speakers:  Bobbi Jo Lazarus, Elliott Davis, Ken Joyner and Christy Lantis, both from the Mecklenburg County Tax Assessors. 

The rates and structures of taxes are changing and impacting commercial real estate dramatically.  Each presenter encouraged commercial real estate firms to become educated on the opportunities and impacts for their properties and organizations.  Click below to view the PowerPoint presentations.

With more than 275 commercial real estate professionals from across the state and fantastic programming, the 2018 NAIOP NC Statewide Conference in Pinehurst was a success. The conference provided a relaxed, open setting, allowing NAIOP members to connect, learn, and enjoy a little competition on the lawn bowling greens.

As you know, the Charlotte Planning Department has been working hard on the Charlotte Place Types and Unified Development Ordinance (UDO), a citywide effort aimed at updating the policies and regulation that guide growth and development in our community.

As part of this project, they are hosting a Coffee Talk on Friday, March 23^rd, from 8am – 9:30am at the Charlotte Powerhouse Studio.  The Coffee Talk will feature Taiwo Jaiyeoba, Director of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Planning Department and Mitchell Silver, FAICP.  Mitch Silver served as Chief Planning and Development Officer and Planning Director for Raleigh, NC and is the immediate past president of the American Planning Association (APA). He currently serves as the New York City Parks Commissioner and is internationally recognized for his leadership in the planning profession and his contributions to contemporary planning issues.
